The Swimming Pool Q’s and Right As Rain will appear at the Red Light Café in Atlanta on Saturday, September 17. Showtime for Right As Rain is 8:00; The Q’s take the stage at 9:00.
The Swimming Pool Q’s will play their 1981 debut The Deep End in its entirety, including several bonus tracks from the album’s 21st Century reissue. (Robert Schmid, who played drums on The Deep End, will play bass.) The group will also perform their forthcoming 6-minute single “System of Love”, as well as a few rare tracks from The Swimming Pool Q’s and Blue Tomorrow.
The Q’s and Right As Rain have a long association dating back to the 1980s. Right As Rain’s self-titled 1987 EP debut was produced by Swimming Pool Q’s’ J.E. Garnett, who also played bass. Q’s singer Anne Richmond Boston designed the packaging, as she did for their 1991 album Stop! Look! Listen!. (Anne also contributed vocals on two of the band’s releases.)
Right As Rain was formed in Atlanta in 1986 by primary songwriter Rick Taylor and original drummer Bruce Threlkeld. The two had attended Rollins College in Florida, where they became regular performers at the campus coffeehouse. They would eventually incorporate their interest in bluegrass and folk music into Right As Rain’s electric guitar rock.
After college, Rick and Bruce spent time in Houston and Hollywood before Taylor relocated briefly in Austin. During his Texas sojourn, Rick had become aware of R.E.M. and the new sounds happening in Georgia. “While I was in Austin, I read an article about The Swimming Pool Q’s,” says Rick. “Atlanta seemed like a better place for us to be.”
After settling in Atlanta, Rick and Bruce joined up with lead guitarist John “Johnny D” Daly [Michelle Malone] and bassist James St. James. They named their new combo Right As Rain and released a 4-song self-titled EP on the Florida-based indie Safety Net. Two full-length albums followed on the pioneering Georgia label DB Records: Undertown (1988; produced with Brendan O’Brien) and Stop! Look! Listen! (1991; produced with Brendan O’Brien and Rob Gal). The group wound down in 1993, but returned with a new line up in 2000 that today includes drummer Pete McDade of Uncle Green/3 Lb. Thrill*.
